We've been weathering the economy as best we can, but it's taken its toll. Beginning August 1st, we will be closed on Mondays. We'll also be shortening the hours to close at 6 pm.
On a brighter note, Nicole will be back from her maternity leave. So, you know, we got that going for us.

Most of the time, artists are responsible for promoting their own shows, not the venue. This is especially the case when the venue in question is a small, neighborhood coffeehouse. So if you are the person who ripped down fliers posted by the artist, threw them on our floor and got mad at the employee working, shame on you. He had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Sellwood Garden Tour

Sellwood Middle School's annual Garden Tour is this Sunday. It's the biggest fundraiser of the year and the forecast is sunny and 80. Tickets are $20 and get you access to 7 gardens in Sellwood and Garthwick. Do some good for the community and come down and get some. What are you waiting for? (At the very least, swing by the Marketplace at the school. The kids'll thank you.)

Holiday Hours

We've shortened our hours for the winter, closing one hour earlier. So, that's 10 pm during the week and 11 pm Fridays and Saturdays.
Also, keep in mind special hours for the upcoming holidays. We're open Christmas Eve from 7 am to 4 pm and closed Christmas Day. New Year's Eve we'll be open 7 am to 4 pm and open late New Year's Day, 8 am to 10 pm. Have a great holiday season.

So, I was reading the Oregonian's review of the Bridgetown Comedy Festival the other day and listed among comic Matt Braunger's bits was a joke about bathroom graffitti involving Karl Marx, Groucho Marx and Richard Marx. Alex has been putting Marx brothers quotes up for a while and a few weeks back, someone else wrote "Religion is the opiate of the masses - Karl Marx" right under one of his quotes. Well, that was just screaming out for "I'll be right here waiting for you - Richard Marx." We'd love to hear the bit, so fill us in if anybody was there.

Papua New Guinea

I got a chance to meet Paul and Elizabeth from New Guinea and their partners from Washington, Aarlie and Larry, at Portland Roasting yesterday. Had some of the new shipment on the Clover, then looked at pictures from a previous PR trip to the estate. It's located in the Western Highlands and the photos are beautiful. Most farms have to send out the cherries to be processed, but the growers here own both a wet and dry mill, allowing them to have total control over the product until it ships. The coffee is grown both on the estate, which was planted in the 60s and in village and smallholder plots.
Talked a little before they had to run out to New Seasons about the partnership between the Madan Estate and PR. When Portland Roasting travelled there, it was the first time they'd seen their product in it's finished state.

Okay, so it's still technically summer for another couple of weeks. Better enjoy it while it lasts.
Check out Paula Sinclair this Saturday at 8 pm. Seriously, if you haven't seen her in a while or never, you need to find out what you're missing.
The next Saturday, September 15th, is also not to be missed. If you've been to the open mic, you'll know what I mean when I say Natalia. An eleven year old singer/songwriter far beyond her years. She's opening for Djafre, who's experimenting with a new musical style (combining guitar and hieroglyphs?). Should be a fun night.
The Bluegrass Jam will return this month, too.

Wow. Apparently, I decided to take the entire month of June off in honor of my birthday.

Store news: John's back from U of O for the summer. Jeka has moved on to Rockin' Roxy's, just down the street. We wish them the best of luck. Holly's finding her groove in her stead.

Strawberry season was incredibly short this year, so we're on to raspberries already. Shortcakes and parfaits. Yum.

The Bee did a lovely article on us in the June issue.
